Dear Ward 14 Residents & Business Owners,
My name is Keener Hachey, and I am hoping to become your Ward 14 City Councillor. I am seeking the nomination for A Better Calgary Party in Ward 14.
I have lived in Calgary since 1991, and in here Ward 14 since 2001. I am married and have two children. I have a solid education from the University of New Brunswick and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
I have a wide array of professional experiences from being a Group Leader, a Senior Systems Analyst, a Programmer Analyst, and a Software Developer with a number of local distinguished Calgary companies. I am an active member in my church, and I am a member of PGIB (Calgary’s largest small business and taxpayer organization). I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the United Conservative Party (UCP) in Calgary Fish Creek helping MLA Myles McDougall. I helped campaign for both UCP MLA Myles McDougall (Calgary Fish Creek), and UCP MLA Eric Bouchard (Calgary Lougheed) in our last provincial election, and I am a supporter of Calgary Midnapore Conservative Member of Parliament Stephanie Kusie, whose riding represents most communities in Ward 14.
The Alberta Government recently passed Bill 20, which allows municipal political parties for the first time. This was done in response to unregulated and out of control spending and influence by the city union. A Better Calgary Party is not a typical political party, as there will be no party leader or party whip. Our duty is to put our Wards first. My policies will be generated from our Ward 14 door-knocking, phone calls, and surveys. This legislation will help create transparency by identifying who Councillor candidates are, and who supports them.
As a small business owner and resident of Ward 14, I have become increasingly frustrated with the lack of common sense at City Hall. So, rather than continuing to yell at the radio, I decided to get more involved and have been door-knocking in Ward 14 for the past several months. This current city council's priorities appear to neglect core essential services and infrastructure in favour of ideologies and pet projects, and the spending suggests little fiscal restraint. The bureaucrats appear to run the show and there are arguably only 3 conservatives on council. Without necessary change and citizens being engaged, we will continue to receive the same. With a voter turnout of just 46.38% in our last 2021 municipal election (which is the lowest turnout of voters for any level (federal, provincial, municipal) of government in Calgary), we can no longer afford to be apathetic about this level of government.
Here are some quick facts:
- The City of Calgary has increased taxes almost every single year since 2010, resulting in more than doubling taxes over that span.
- Over 40% of City employees now earn base salaries in excess of $100,000 per year.
- The City Administration has risen by 2,268 staff in just two years.
- Total City budget is now almost $5 Billion per year.
- Calgary's downtown office vacancy rate is still the highest in the country.
- Last year, bankruptcies rose in Calgary.
- City Council opposes our wishes on most issues as evidenced by their support for Blanket Rezoning.
I could go on and on, and I will be listing more things in due time on my site.
I believe we need to:
- Focus on primary items such as roads, water mains, bridges, traffic lights, sewers, utilities, safety, snow clearing, potholes, infrastructure, etc. Not on issues like what the current Council voted to spend $87 Billion on a Climate Emergency, which is not the primary directive of the municipal level of government.
- Focus on municipal issues and stay in our lane. The fact that the City continues to spend millions on public art is concerning.
- Quit thinking we can save the world vs focusing on making Calgary a great place to live and do business.
- Make valuable and respectful use of taxpayers' money.
- Conduct a full Organizational Review of all City Departments to effectively ascertain where wise cuts should be made. I believe an Organizational Review would assuredly identify hundreds of thousands, if not millions, in wise-cut savings per year!
There are other issues that I will be discussing with you at the door and throughout my campaign.
I believe Calgary needs Councillors who have signed the front of a cheque and not just the back of one. We need Councillors who understand that budgets do not balance themselves. I will be very instrumental in attracting business to Calgary which means jobs for you, your children, and grandchildren. The best way to look at this is: Ward 14 taxpayers are the shareholders, and I am running for election in Ward 14 to be your Board Member for the corporation of the City of Calgary. We need to elect Councillors with both life and business experience. We need to elect Councillors that understand the municipal level of government and its very limited focus and jurisdiction.
Thank you in advance if you have already shared your Ward 14 concerns and for supporting efforts for conservative unity in the October 2025 Municipal election. If you have not already provided your concerns, I encourage you to share them on my website. I will continue to fight hard on your behalf, and I will be releasing Solutions For A Growing Calgary that focus on less government, lower taxes, and political accountability. Again, please tell me your top 3 concerns by going to my website or by sending me an email to info@KeenerHachey.ca. I look forward to hearing your feedback and discussing your concerns.
I do not have all the answers to every issue and concern, but I will work hard and collaborate with others on establishing quality, justifiable, cost-effective, and needed solutions.
Thanking you in advance.
Be sure to come back to my site as I will be giving updates as often as I can.
Regards,
Keener Hachey
